First rule, don’t be gullible. There are no Top Secret Techniques of marketing or making money online and even if there were, nobody would ever tell you what they are. There are plenty of people on the Internet who will try and sell you this pipe-dream which include the tricks of winning the lottery, making gazillions of dollars each week or retiring only a few months after implementing their plan. Albeit, you will need to cough up the $39.95 to buy their ebook or white paper to learn these top secret tricks, but I would suggest doing a little more investigating and homework before you turn over your hard earned money. The old adage, “If it’s too good to be true, it probably is” still rings clear and should always trigger an alarm if you think something is not kosher.
Obviously there are best practices and minor tweaks you make to improve your marketing plan and help bring new, potential customers to your website. I cannot understand why so many people think there are shortcuts to building a business, gaining exposure or a first page ranking on Google. It is a slow and tedious process and takes time to achieve tangible results.
I am going to share some simple advice that should go a long way. So pay attention and take notes.
There are 365 days in a year. Take away the weekends and you’re left with 260 work days, assuming you work Monday through Friday. Now subtract another 25 days for holidays and you are left with 235 working days per year.
Now, here is the easy part. If you commit to doing one simple and easy marketing item each day, you will slowly build a respectable arsenal and marketing platform to help you achieve your goals. It’s all about being intelligent and working slowly, not trying to achieve unobtainable results overnight.
Below are some things you can do on a daily basis. Do one of the suggested items each day.
- Send a personal thank you note to a customer.
- Write a blog post about how someone is using your product or service.
- Write a blog post that will help or inform others and look for nothing in return.
- Write a short article about how something in your industry works.
- Make a business introduction in a significant way that benefits both parties.
- Help someone resolve a problem. This can also be done online.
- Create an Infographic or something that helps explain your business or process
- Record a video that teaches your customers how to do something.
- Teach one of your employees a new skill.
- Go for a five minute walk and clear your mind. Then come back with at least five ideas on how to improve what you offer the world and be sure to write them down.
- Change something on your website and monitor how it changes interactions.
- Give someone a compliment. Even if it is someone you don’t know.
- Make at least one new connection. Either LinkedIn or Facebook is fine.
- Find out something you didn’t know about one of your employees, customers or co-workers.
If you follow the basic guidelines above, every day for an entire year, I can assure you it will benefit you as a person, in your business and professional career.
