Friday, March 15, 2013:  The day finally came when all rumours were put to rest and Samsung unveiled its latest flagship phone Galaxy S4 to the world. Interestingly, Samsung chose Apple's home-ground, US, as its turf for the curtain-raising event of Samsung Galaxy S4. The device was unveiled in New York. The smartphone comes with next-generation hardware and latest version of Android Jelly Bean operating system. The smartphone is clearly poised to compete with the likes of Apple iPhone, Nokia Lumia 920, HTC One, Sony Xperia Z, BlackBerry Z10 and other high-end smartphones likely to be launched soon.

Samsung Galaxy S4 has been launched with the tagline 'Life Companion' and will reach shelves across the globe by the end of April. However, there is no word about its launch in India so far, but one can be sure that India, being a prominent market for Samsung, will be amongst the first batch of countries to get the device. Samsung has launched Galaxy S devices in India within weeks of their global launch and is expected to repeat the trend this time as well.
Samsung Galaxy S4 comes loaded with Android 4.2 aka Jelly Bean operating system. Android 4.2 is the latest version of Android launched by Google. Needless to say, Samsung has rendered the device with its proprietary TouchWiz user interface, that offers some unique features which may help Samsung to woo customers.
One of the most attractive feature of this smartphone is its gesture-based control. With this, users can perform tasks on their phone without even touching the screen. It functions with the help of the front camera and allow users to perform many 'smart' actions without the use their hands. A striking example of smart gesture is 'smart pause'. It pauses a video automatically! As soon as the camera notices the user looking away from the screen it pauses the video being played and resumes when the user looks back at the screen. Also, while reading an article, users can scroll down the web page simply by swiping their hands down in the air. They don't need to touch the screen to scroll down the web page.
Yet another astounding feature that Samsung Galaxy S4 offers is the 'Dual Mode' option. Dual Mode allows the users to use rear and front camera for video capture simultaneously. The phone also has an in-built translator. Samsung Galaxy S4 comes packed with Exynos 5410 processor. It is an eight-core phone, with four of them being the high-performance cores based on A15 architecture from ARM. These cores run at 1.8GHz while the other four cores, which are slower - 1.2GHz - but more power efficient, are based on A7 architecture. Samsung has ensured that the smartphone rules the market for another year at least, which is why the company has packed it with top-of-the-line hardware. It is touted as the world's fastest smartphone in the market and will continue to retain its position at least till smartphones powered by Nvidia's Tegra 4 arrive in the market.
Samsung Galaxy S4 comes equipped with 2 GB DDR3 RAM and sports a 12.7-cm (4.99-inch) SuperAMOLED screen with FullHD (1920x1080 pixels) resolution. It has 2 MP front camera and 13 MP rear camera, both of these can record FullHD videos. Samsung Galaxy S4 will be offered with three variants of internal storage including 16 GB, 32 GB and 64 GB. It will also offer support for a microSD card of up to 64 GB. It weighs 130 grams and is powered by a 2600 mAh.
According to a TOI report, while unveiling the smartphone, J K Shin, head of Samsung Electronics, said, “Samsung has worked to bring innovation and technology closer to life. We will imagine the possibilities, explore a new direction, and listen to you, to help us understand what a smartphone should provide in our lives.”
IDC estimates reveal that Samsung led the smartphone market in 2012 with a market share of around 30 per cent, followed by Apple, with a market share of around 19 per cent.
