How Much Traffic Do You Need To Make $100,000 With Google AdSense?

Google AdSense
Is it really possible to make $100,000 a year from Google AdSense (or by selling ads on your website/blog)? If so, how much traffic do you really need to make big bucks with Google AdSense?
Let’s say you want to make $100,000 a year from Google AdSense and/or Google AdSense alternatives.
$100,000 divided by 365 = $274 a day.
So, you have to create either: 274 pages which earns $1 a day OR 548 pages which earns 50 cents a day OR 1096 pages which earns 25 cents a day (which sounds reasonable, right?). Let’s say you have 1,096 high quality blogposts and you earn $0.25 per click from AdSense.
From my analysis, I found that the average Page CTR is around 1%. But it really depends upon your niche, web site design and other factors. In fact I have achieved a Page CTR of over 20% in 2007 for a niche website and was making $100+ a day from Google AdSense alone.

Google AdSense Glossary

Page Views
A page view is what Google counts in your reports every time a user views a page displaying Google ads. We will count one page view regardless of the number of ads displayed on that page.
For example, if you have a page displaying three ad units and it is viewed twice, you will generate two page views.
Clicks
For standard content ads, Google count a click when a user clicks on an ad.
For link units, Google count a click when a user clicks on an ad on the page of ads, after selecting a link in the link unit.
Page Click Through Rate (Page CTR)
The Page Click Through Rate (CTR) is the number of ad clicks divided by the number of impressions or page views that you have received.
Page CTR = Clicks / Page Views
For example, if you received 5 Clicks from 100 Page Views, then your Page CTR would be 5%. (5/100*100=5%)
Cost Per Click (CPC)
The Cost Per Click (CPC) is the amount you earn each time a user clicks on your ad. The CPC for any ad is determined by the advertiser; some advertisers may be willing to pay more per click than others, depending on what they’re advertising.
Page Revenue Per Thousand Impressions (Page RPM)
Page Revenue Per Thousand Impressions (RPM) is calculated by dividing your estimated earnings by the number of page views you received, then multiplying by 1000.
Page RPM = (Estimated Earnings / Number of Page Views) * 1,000
For example, if you earned an estimated $0.15 from 25 page views, then your page RPM would equal ($0.15 / 25) * 1000, or $6.00.
Estimated Earnings
Your account balance (or earnings) for the time period selected.
You can increase the Page CTR by using one of those high CTR WordPress Themefor Google AdSense. But I really wouldn’t recommend those WordPress themes as it will impact the user experience very negatively. Instead, you can focus on creating awesome content and driving more traffic so that it increases your Google AdSense earnings (or advertising revenues) naturally.
Now, let’s assume that you have a Page CTR of 1% and your average CPC is $0.25 (I believe it’s a quite achievable target unless your keywords have no advertiser competition – e.g. a recipe blog).
Some of the top paying AdSense niches are Finance, Internet Marketing, Technology, Web Hosting, Internet & Computers, Software, Health etc. and some of the lowest paying AdSense niches are Entertainment, Arts, Movies, Celebrity Gossips, News blog, Jokes, Wallpapers, Quotes, Recipes, Photo blogs etc.

So, You Want To Make $100,000 A Year With Google AdSense, Right?

As mentioned earlier $100,000 a year means you have to earn $274 a day. If your average CPC is $0.25 then you need 100,000/0.25 = 400,000 clicks a year (or approximately 1,000 clicks a day) to earn $100,000 a year from Google AdSense. Assuming that your Page CTR is 1% you need approximately 100,000 page views a day. Now, let’s say your “Bounce Rate” (it is the estimated percentage of visits to your website that consist of a single page view) is 100%. It means that you need 100,000 unique visitors a day itself to generate 100,000 page views a day.
In a nutshell, you need 100,000 visitors a day to make $100,000 a year from Google AdSense alone (with a CTR of 1% and CPC of $0.25).
But you are not using AdSense alone to monetize your website. Right? Let’s say you’re selling banner ads directly and is also selling CPM advertising which is an effective way to monetize your website.
What are CPM ads?
CPM (Cost Per Mille) stands for Cost Per 1,000 Impressions. CPM networks pays for every 1,000 impressions you generate. If a CPM ad network is paying you $1 CPM then it means that they’re paying you $1 for every 1,000 page views you generate.
CPM Network earnings total depend upon your traffic quality but you can expect anywhere between $1 – $3 per 1,000 impressions. So, if you generate 100,000 page views a day then you can make $100 – $300 a day from CPM Networks. Again, you can earn $100 – $300 (or maybe even more) a day by selling banner ads directly to advertisers.
Now, you can split the traffic into three as you’re earning $300 each from 3 advertising networks. It means that you need 100,000/3=33,333 unique visitors a day (with a bounce rate of 100%) to make approximately $274/day.
Again, if you have an authority blog then your bounce rate will never be 100%. In that case you can expect an average page view of 1.5 per user. It means that 50% of your visitors exits from the landing page and others visit more than one page from your website.
All in all, you need approximately 20,000 visitors a day to generate 30,000+ page views and it can earn $274 a day which translates to $100,000 a year in advertising revenues.

Microsoft organises IT workshop for Ghanaian students

Microsoft organises IT workshop for Ghanaian students

Global ICT giant Microsoft has organised an information technology workshop for Ghanaian students to motivate and help them develop applications that can be used to solve real life problems in Ghana and in African.

The initiative was aimed to expose students to Microsoft technologies such as Bing Search, Windows Phone 8, Windows 8, Windows Azure, Visual Studio and open source technology.

Addressing students at Ghana Technology University College in Accra, Mr Shina Oyetoso, Developer Platform Evangelist of Microsoft said Microsoft had initiatives such as Dream Spark, imagine cup, students to business, build your business programme and employability portals to equip students and start-ups.

According to him, the dream spark initiative gives students free access to Microsoft designer and developer tools helping to advance key technical skills.

With the initiative, he said, students can develop their own applications using Microsoft’s designer and developer tools.

“We are just exposing them [the students] to what Microsoft technologies are and what they do so they will be able develop applications using our technologies, so they can sell to make money for themselves”, Mr Oyetoso added.

He said Microsoft had a training programme designed to support aspiring and emerging entrepreneurs, adding that the initiative would provide the students with start-ups and skills to grow into becoming competitors in the industry.

On the students to business programme, he said the initiative would seek to match them with jobs or internships in the technology industry.

Mr Oyetoso tasked students to develop software and applications that could be adopted as powerful tools to boost economic growth and reduce poverty.

He expressed Microsoft’s commitment to use its technologies to help solve problems for sustainable growth on the African continent.

Bill Gates is once again the world’s richest person.

The 57-year-old co-founder of Redmond, Washington-based Microsoft Corp. (MSFT) recaptured the title from Mexican investor Carlos Slim yesterday, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, as the software maker hit a five-year high. It is the first time Gates has held the mantle since 2007. His fortune is valued at $72.7 billion, up 16 percent year-to-date.
Slim’s America Movil (AMXL) SAB, the largest mobile-phone operator in the Americas, has dropped 14 percent this year after Mexico’s Congress passed a bill that could quash the billionaire’s market dominance. That’s helped erase more than $3 billion from the 73-year-old tycoon’s net worth.

Trade Ministry launches "Innovation Ghana"

The Ministry of Trade and Industry with support from Google, has launched an “Innovation Ghana”, an initiative to get Ghanaians to appreciate the use of the internet and its impact on the Ghanaian economy.
Innovation Ghana is aimed at strengthening and encouraging local products and services created by Ghanaians for Ghanaians. The launching was also used to recognize six outstanding Ghanaian innovators, “Innovation Heroes”, who have used the internet to positively contribute to the economy by developing and infusing creative ideas into products and services.
Innovation Ghana was born from a study conducted by Dalberg and commissioned by Googlewhich revealed the socio-economic impact and potential of the internet in Ghana and how small and medium scale enterprise (SME) owners expected that the internet would help them grow their businesses.
One of the key findings of the study identified that internet enabled services were having a positive effect on the public and private sectors in the fields of agriculture, health, finance, education, energy, transport and commerce due to improved information and supply management, more effective communications as well as extended service delivery.
The study also established that without sufficient investment in infrastructure, policy makers faced limitations in their ability to drive socio-economic impact from internet use by citizens.
In a speech read on his behalf, the Minister of Trade and Industry, Haruna Iddrisu acknowledged the role micro, small and medium scale enterprises (MSMEs) were playing in the socio-economic development of the country and the challenges they were facing.
He noted that it was against this backdrop that the government with assistance from the World Bank, launched an online portal for the MSMEs to raise awareness of services being provided to Ghanaian SMEs.
Commenting on the Dalberg report, Mr Haruna Iddrisu noted that government would continue to support greater access to the internt by continuing to increase infrastructure and access in order to provide stable and high quality last mile internet access to all.
“Developing infrastructure will increase access to information and allow new products and services to be built. These are the foundations for an innovative ecosystem”, he added.
Mr Haruna Iddrisu also promised government’s support to entrepreneurs in getting the needed funding, while creating access to markets and the ability to connect with markets, and providing them with a fair and transparent regulatory environment for them to operate.
The Innovation Heroes awards were presented to FaashionistaGh, an online source of information on the Ghanaian fashion industry; Let Games, the first game development studio in Ghana and second in Sub-Saharan Africa and Dream Oval, an internet and mobile applications developer that allows online payments and distribution of information via SMS.
The rest were Ghana Decides, a non-partisan project aimed at fostering a better-informed electorate for a free, fair and safe 2012 election using online social media tools; Roots by Naa, a company dedicated to creating handmade fashion accessories out of Ghanaian textiles and Ghana Trade; a national web based products gallery that features locally manufactured products and services.
Country Manager for Google Ghana, Estelle Akofio-Sowah congratulated the award winners for being creative and presenting solutions to the Ghanaian populace, adding that, “the innovation awards reaffirm the findings of the Dalberg report that the internet is a tremendous, undisputed force for economic growth and social change. Their stories will inspire the next generation of innovators to dream big, to dream now and solve the problems of today using technology and the Internet.”

Users of android devices in Ghana can now move or drive about freely and easily to locations following Google’s introduction and upgrade of maps application in the country, which now has voice prompt upgrade.

Google Ghana introduced Google Maps Navigation recently to enable owners of android devices such as smart phones and iphones have comprehensive, accurate and easy-to-go maps with built in local search, voice guided turn-by-turn navigation to all kinds of places.

Mrs Estelle Akofio-Sowah, Country Manager, Google Ghana said on Wednesday that for a while now users of Google Maps in Ghana had been able to get direction whether sitting in their cars or whether walking in Ghana but receiving the information in text form while driving or walking using their phones.

But she said: “Now what we have done now is to improve the safety of that, because you will not be driving and using your phone at the same time anymore. You now have a voice that tells you in five meters take a right turn and if you miss that turning it will redirect you. It is now giving you a voice prompt turn-by-turn navigation to get to your destinations”.

She said this during an experiential session with the media, IT experts, representatives from the Fidelity Bank and the Ghana Tourism Authority; and students from the Valley View University and Ghana Telecom University, who shared their experiences on the use of Google Maps.

Mrs Akofio-Sowah said in terms of content, Google Ghana had improved tremendously in enriching the information on maps with the support of users. In Ghana, she said, the maps project started four years ago and that it was important for people to get more and more interested to make life easy for them.

“There is pretty much information on every street name in Ghana that is known now on Google Maps. The efforts we driving now is really to showcase that people can use Google Maps to tell the world where they are. It is really simple,” she added.

Jacqueline Rajuai, Programme Manager, Google Maps, underscored the need to ensure constant updating of information on the maps with the changing times in order to keep them fresh always for users.

“Maps are now simple to use and easy to understand by every single person… Maps bring data to life,” she said and noted that last year in 2012 globally about one billion Google Maps applications were downloaded. Again, Rajuai said, Over 800,000 websites last year had Google Maps embedded in them.

The Greater Accra Regional Minister Julius Debrah expressed happiness with the development and introduction of Google Maps Navigation in Ghana and noted that hitherto people carried all kinds of devices with navigation and vehicles with navigation screens yet they were not functional and did not have an idea what benefit they were.

But, he added, today with the effort of Google Ghana, we have solutions to almost all our needs just on a mobile device.

Users of Google Maps can now discover great places in Ghana to eat, drink, shop and play. They can search to find addresses, places and businesses around the country and get voice guided, turn-by-turn driving directions, and find their ways by train, bus, subway or walking directions.

NITA to collaborate with Microsoft

The National Information Technology Agency (NITA) is collaborating with Microsoft to develop the capacity of the government to use ICT in delivering services to citizens.
This was disclosed to the Ghana News Agency by Mr William Tevie, Director General of NITA after holding discussions with Mr Ali Famwawi, Vice President of Microsoft in Accra.
“I am very happy that Microsoft is collaborating with NITA,” Mr Tevie said.
He said NITA is adopting an open software policy for government network in addition to procurement of volume product licenses for government agencies from Microsoft to reduce cost of ICT at the Ministries Departments and Agencies (MDAs) .
He said provision would also be made for the MDAs which are using other open source software on the network.
“NITA is on course to expanding the network to cover the whole country by 2015,” Mr Tevie added.

According to him, the second phase of the expansion of the government network is currently ongoing to bring on board 60 new base stations to add to the 30 existing ones.

“A national data centre in Accra and a secondary data centre in Kumasi are also due to be completed by the end of year.”

Mr Famwawi, who was in the country for the launch of the Hope City Project in Accra said Microsoft is going to collaborate with NITA to train government officials, build the technical capacity of NITA to support government ICT and to help Parliament with ICT solutions and training.
He said Microsoft is working on delivering unique identifiers and assist NITA to deploy MS SharePoint collaboration tools to enhance productivity within the MDAs.
Other areas being considered are skilled support for government business.
NITA is the government IT agency responsible for ensuring MDAs use ICT in government business and at costs that are minimal.
NITA has rolled out a government fibre optic network around the Ministries enclave in Accra and a WiMAX Wireless network across the 10 Regional capitals.
It is servicing the network by buying bulk bandwidth at a cheaper price and is sharing it to government agencies.

YouTube Launches Subscription Fees

YouTube has launched a trial scheme for paid channels on its website.

Under the pilot programme, a small number of content makers will offer the channels for subscriptions starting at $0.99 (£0.64) a month.

Each channel will offer a free 14-day trial and many will have discounted annual rates.

Although the initial 53-channel line-up is fairly niche, one expert suggested the move might ultimately squeeze some smaller rivals out of the market.

YouTube, which is owned by Google, said the launch was part of an effort to enable "content creators to earn revenue for their creativity".

For example, the children's television favourite, Sesame Street will offer full episodes on its pay channel when it launches.

Subscribers can pay using either their credit cards or through Google's own Wallet service.

The paid channels involved in the pilot are diverse.

They include National Geographic Kids, Acorn - which provides episodes from several British TV series -and Fix My Hog Premium, which is aimed at Harley Davidson motorcycle enthusiasts.

"This is just the beginning", YouTube said on its blog.

"We'll be rolling paid channels out more broadly in the coming weeks as a self-service feature for qualifying partners.

"And as new channels appear, we'll be making sure you can discover them."

Traditional TV turn-off?
The advent of paid channels on YouTube means Google joins Netflix, Hulu and Amazon in offering subscription-based alternatives to traditional pay-TV.

"The wider picture here is that the internet and TV worlds are colliding," Ian Maude, an online media expert at consultants Enders Analysis told the BBC.

"The YouTube move will make it much harder for smaller standalone online subscription-based platforms because Google has the infrastructure to make it easy for content to be hosted, delivered and billed for.

"But it was always inevitable that Google was going to do this."

One billion viewers
Google bought YouTube in 2006 for $1.65bn. The service is believed to generate a small amount of revenue from advertising, but the vast majority of its content has been free-to-watch.

To make itself more attractive to potential advertisers, YouTube has gradually added professional content, such as full-length films and TV shows, to its vast library of amateur videos.

YouTube says a billion people around the world use the service every month.

"If YouTube were a country, we'd be the third largest in the world after China and India," the company said in March.
