Screenshot of myjoyonline.com, which is the top website in Ghana.

1. Myjoyonline: Myjoyonline is Ghana’s top website. It is a major resource site for Ghanaians home and abroad. It streams radio programmes from about six radio sations, namely Joy FM, Adom FM, Hitz FM, Nykira FM, Asempa FM, and Luv FM.
People visit the site more than any other Ghanaian-owned sites in the country. It ranks 6 in Ghana behind Facebook, Google.com.gh, Google.com, Yahoo.com and youtube.com, which are all foreign sites. Myjoyonline overtook Ghanaweb to occupy this position after improving content and making it more timely. It also redesigned its website and invested in human resource.

2. Ghanaweb: Ghanaweb used to be the undisputed top news website in Ghana, but times have changed. The site has been overtaken by myjoyonline. The lack of radio streaming is one factor that has accounted for this, but more importantly, Ghanaweb’s inability to provide timely content has been its undoing.
Nonetheless, It is still the second most visited Ghanaian website at number 8 behind twitter, Facebook, Google.com.gh, Google.com, Yahoo.com and youtube.com.

3. Peacefmonline.com: Peacefmonline is a major resource site for Ghanaians home and abroad. The site streams programmes from at least three radio stations – Peace FM, Okay FM and Hello FM. It is the 3rd most visited Ghanaian website, and ranks 12 in the country.
4. Citifmonline: Citifmonline, a major resource site, is the 4th most visited Ghanaian site.
5. Ghananewslink: This site, a news portal, is the 5th most visited Ghanaian site.
6. SpyGhana: Spyghana, a major site for all news about Ghana as well as international news, ranks 8 in the country. It is currently the fastest growing site in Ghana.
7. BusinessGhana.com: is the 7th most visited Ghanaian site.
8. Web4Africa.net: This site offers professional web design, web applications development, web hosting, domain name registration, and other E-Commerce solutions, to clients worldwide. It’s registered in Ghana, and is the 6th most visited Ghanaian site.
9. Multitvworld.com: This is corporate website for Multi TV, a satellite TV provider in Ghana. It also offers daily news about Ghana. It ranks 10 in Ghana.
10. Ghanaleak.net: This site thrives mainly on pornographic content, especially leaked pictures and sex tapes of individuals and sometimes celebrities. It ranks 9 in the country.

All set for Mobile Web West Africa

All set for Mobile Web West Africa

All is set for the third edition of West Africa’s leading mobile focused conference dubbed Mobile Web West Africa (MWWA) 2013.

The conference is slated for May 7th through 10th at the Four Points by Sheraton in Lagos, Nigeria.

Ghanaian startups from Meltwater Entreprenuerial School of Technology (MEST), including Saya Chat, Nandi Mobile, MPawa, Leti Games, and Adsbrook would be representing Ghana at the conference.

Organizers of the conference, All Amber said in a statement copied to Adom Business it is a little just one week to the conference and participation is almost fully booked already.

“Only a handful of places now remain for the popular industry get-together - this will be the third year in a row that the event completely sells out,” Event Director Matthew Dawes said in the statement.

Dawes was enthusiastic that this year’s edition of MWWA has booked up faster than either of the previous conferences and this is an indication of the level of progress in the industry.

He said MWWA2013 would feature the best speaker line-up yet and the industry support this year is above and beyond anything the conference has experienced before.

“My hope is that the presentations, discussions and networking on offer will enable and facilitate growth, as that is my main objective,” Dawes said.

Speakers for the conference comprise of the very best local and international experts from organizations including Qualcomm, Etisalat, MXit, VConnect, biNu, Thomson Reuters, iROKING, Jumia Nigeria, M-Net Africa, Spinlet, L5Lab, Eskimi, Guinness Nigeria and Airtel.

Main One, Dimension Data, Carat MP and MIH Internet are just a few of the many companies sending representatives to the event.

Dawes said the 2013 edition features the first ever Mobile Marketing West Africa Focus Day, slated for Tuesday May 7th, 2013.

Mobile marketing experts from Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya and South Africa are expected to share best practice insights and case studies on mobile advertising, data & analytics, mobile social networks and location based services at the May 7 event.

Presenters for the Focus Day event include Google, Konga, Wild Fusion, 2go, Twinpine and Ghana’s AdsBrook.

MWWA2013 will also bring together the top minds in mobile app development and feature the usual App Developer Competition will on the App Developer Day slated for May 10, 2013.

The day will showcase creations from five of the region’s best app developers, and prizes would include BlackBerry handsets and an iPad mini.

Meanwhile, the App Developer Day will also be used to provide detailed training for developers seeking to optimize and monetize their mobile apps.

All Amber was founded in 2009 by Matthew Dawes to produce interactive, discussion-based events specifically aimed at high-level strategists in mobile technology across Africa. To date, All Amber events are industry-leading and highly acclaimed

Thousands Of Apache Servers Attacked!

malware, Apache server, Blachole, exploit, cyber attack, Linux

Another cyber attack has been uncovered! Eset, security firm has found out about a malicious cyber campaign, which reportedly uses a backdoor exploit in Apache Web servers. It then directs users to websites that carry Blackhole exploit packs. The firm has shared that the attack has already victimised thousands of websites.

In a V3 exclusive, Righard Zwienenberg, Eset senior researcher said, “The backdoor, codenamed Linux/Cdorked.A, is one of the most advanced attacks to target the Apache platform, boasting advanced detection dodging powers. The configuration of Linux/Cdorked.A is pushed to the system using obfuscated HTTP requests not apparent in Apache's log. This hides the fact that the web server is compromised. Linux/Cdorked.A can also receive commands with HTTP-POST.”

Zwienenberg further added that the real problem here is that Linux/Cdorked.A is known to leave no evidence of the hosts that have been compromised on the hard drive. It just leaves a modified httpd binary, which complicates the entire process of forensics analysis, making it difficult to assess the danger levels.

"With so many Web servers running Apache, potentially hundreds of thousands of sites are vulnerable to this hard-to-detect threat. Other than modifying the existing httpd daemon service, all other traces are only in memory. Traffic to the website may be directed to other sites, where some of the redirects are to sites that carry the notorious Blackhole Exploit Kit," added Zwienenberg.

"Businesses must make sure they are always are up to date in applying all security patches. The days when patch management was a luxury are long gone. These must be completed so every employee is safe, and complemented with appropriate prevention measurements, such as anti-malware security suites,” he suggested.

(Book)Programming Android: Java Programming for the New Generation of Mobile Devices ($28.40 & FREE Shipping)

In this book, unlike other books on Android, you will not only learn how to program for Android but you will gain a thorough understanding of its architecture. Indeed, this book covers much more ground than other books on the subject and each topic is supported by source code examples that you can "fork" on GitHub and use for your own projects. This is what makes it an invaluable reference book for any programmer coming to Android from Java, C++ or other mobile platforms such as the iPhone.

This book is divided into four distinct parts:

"Part 1: Tools and Basics" where you learn to familiarize yourself with the various development tools that make up the ecosystem of Android including a quick introduction to Java.

"Part 2: About Android Framework" where you will learn the necessary foundation to build robust Android applications.

"Part 3: A Skeleton Application for Android" will teach you Android Programming in more depth. You will learn to build a GUI that can run both on a tablet or on a smaller screen, the foundation for you to connect to web services using REST and more.

Finally, "Part 4: Advanced Topics" introduces you to more advanced concepts such as the search interface, geolocation & maps, multimedia, sensors, NFC, gestures, contacts and media-social and how to use the NDK to build Android applications in C++.

I own both the first and the second editions. I've compared the contents of two editions and I can stated that the book has been completely revised by the authors to clarify the text in several places and to update the examples to Android 4. For example, Chapter 6 of the first edition (Effective Java for Android) was merged into Chapter 3 and topics such as callbacks and overrides have been added.

Here is a non-exhaustive list of the improvements between the second and the first editions:

- A section called "Alternative Distribution" has been added to Chapter 4 (Getting your application into User's Hands), which describes how to publish your application on other distribution networks than Google Market (namely Amazon and Verizon).

- Chapter 6 (Building a View) was also largely revamped with the addition of sections on multi-touch and debugging & optimizing views.

- Addition of Chapter 11 (Building a User Interface) represents the addition of over 20 pages of new material that deals with the design of graphical user interface and takes into account the tablets. Chapter 7 (Fragments and multiplatform support) has also been extended to cover tablets.

- Chapter 14 (Search) was also added. It deals with Android's search interface and how to use it in your own applications.

- A section on StreetView was added in Chapter 15 (Location and Mapping).

- In chapter 17 (Sensors, NFC, Speech, Gestures, and Accessibility), the "P2P Mode" has been revised to cover the notion of "beaming".

- A section in Chapter 19 (The Android Native Development Kit) was added to describes how to edit C++ source code in Eclipse.

In all, close to 60 pages of new material have been added for this edition!

The code examples have also been revised and updated to Android 4 and their organization was also changed. Thus, in the GitHub repository, examples are now organized by subject rather than by chapter number to facilitate the search for a particular example by the reader.

In conclusion, Android Programming 2nd Edition, is still THE book to put in the hands of programmers who want to learn not only how to program Android, but also how to make well designed and robust Android applications.
