Is Google Using Android To Build Advantage For Its Apps?

Google, EU, Android, Fairsearch, mobile operating system

Google is in the center of scrutiny, yet again. European Union had lashed charges against Google for the manner in which the company displays search results, which they accuse, favour the company’s own services over their competitor. While the company is trying hard to come clean of the EU charges, there are a new set of revelations. Reportedly, EU officials are looking into Google’s mobile operating system. This was shared by EU competition chief, Joaquin Almunia to the New York Times, without divulging details.
This new complaint was registered by Fairsearch Europe, which is a group of companies including Microsoft, Nokia, and Oracle. As per the report, the group says that Google is using Android "as a deceptive way to build advantages for key Google apps in 70 per cent of the smartphones shipped today," Thomas Vinje, the lead lawyer for Fairsearch Europe.

Recent data from IDC indicated that Google's share of the smartphone OS market grew to 70.1 per cent by 2012 in comparison to 2011.

The blog post by Fairsearch, which was shared last month reads, "Google is writing rules that govern the mobile ecosystem -- from app developers, device makers, mobile payment enablers, network operators, and of course, advertisers -- to favor Google. Google's emerging mobile monopoly has the power to shape consumers' mobile Internet experience, and not necessarily for the better."

Google defended itself by saying, "We continue to work cooperatively with the European Commission."
